Chundukwa – A Zambezi bush camp near Victoria Falls

Report by Richard

Livingstone is an excellent area to visit at the start or end of a safari holiday. With easy access to the Victoria Falls and plenty of activities possible, a few days here can be as relaxed or busy as

you wish. In recent years our clients have particularly enjoyed elephant back and horse riding, flights over the Falls - in planes or helicopters - and canoeing trips on the Zambezi River lasting anything from an afternoon to three days.

No experience is necessary to canoe as guests are accompanied by an experienced guide.   As you gently drift downstream you should get good sightings of elephant and other animals coming to the river to drink. If doing an overnight trip you will paddle to an uninhabited island in the late afternoon where a camp will have been set up ready for your arrival.  Dining under the stars and sleeping in a simple tent is often a real safari highlight.   The following morning after a good breakfast you continue downstream until you finish your trip.

These canoeing trips – suitable for families, couples and single travellers - are arranged through Chundukwa, a lovely lodge which Aardvark clients have been fans of for many years. The Lodge is now under the new ownership of Peter and Orla Cornelius who have spent many years working in hospitality both in Orla’s homeland Ireland as well as other lodges in Zambia.

The lodge’s four simple open-fronted chalets balance on stilts over edge of the Zambezi River, just 16 miles upstream from the Victoria Falls, and its bush camp style fits particularly well into a safari itinerary.  Whether you wish to canoe or not, it’s an inexpensive gem in a wonderful location.
