Richard's Namibian Highlights

Author: Richard Smith

I’ve been to Namibia a number of times before, so when Victoria and I headed out of Windhoek on our recent self-drive trip, I was expecting the wide open spaces, desert adapted species such as oryx and springbok, the quietness, and stunning desert scenery. That’s what I found, but I was surprised by two new highlights.

Stargazing at Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge The clear skies and lack of ambient light in the desert make the night sky brilliant, and CCAfrica have taken advantage of this by providing their lodge at Sossusvlei with a state of the art electronically-controlled telescope and, most importantly, a resident astronomer.

Like a great safari guide, he had infectious enthusiasm and superb knowledge. In the short time we spent with him we saw an iridium flare from a turning satellite, spotted a shooting star, looked at the rings round Saturn and dust clouds in the Milky Way.

Seals & Kayaks on the coast
Walvis Bay is home to a number of seal colonies and sea kayaking is one of the best ways to meet these fascinating creatures.

The kayaks are stable and easy to use and there are doubles for those wishing to share the work. These floating novelties seem to bring out the natural curiosity in the seals who swim close to you, even under the kayak, and sometimes cheekily slap their tails on the water to splash you.
