Whales, Meerkats, and the Big Five
A malaria-free trip in South Africa between July & November.
This is an outstanding trip in South Africa. It combines whale watching on the Cape Coast, stunning Kalahari Desert scenery, including a family of habituated meerkats, and finally a traditional big five safari experience in Madikwe Game Reserve. Each of the three properties is in a malaria-free area.
The Southern Right whales calve at various spots along the Cape Coast between June and December and during the peak season of August to October, sightings are guaranteed almost daily. Grootbos, just two hours east of Cape Town, affords some of the most spectacular whale watching along the whole coastline, with calves and bull whales coming within thirty meters of the shoreline.
Tswalu, on the edge of the Kalahari Desert in the Northern Cape Province is home to several colonies of habituated meerkats which guests can view at close range. There are also beautiful black-maned lions in the area as well as many other desert species. Other activities include game drives and walks, horse riding, and superb stargazing.
The final stop is Jaci’s Safari Lodge in Madikwe. This well established lodge offers big five game viewing with experienced guides. The owners Jan & Jaci van Heteren built the lodge themselves and are still very involved with its day to day running. Jan is a guide and understands the value of great guiding.
Children of all ages are welcomed at all three lodges.
