Botswana Safaris

Map of Botswana

Botswana stands out as  one of the finest safari destinations in Africa and the magnificent Okavango Delta is at the heart of Botswana’s wildlife and safari area. Here, Africa's third-largest river fans out across the desert sands in a huge maze of sparkling channels and lazy lagoons, producing a lush green oasis half the size of Switzerland.

The Delta forms one of the world’s richest ecosystems and is literally teeming with all kinds of flora and fauna.  It is a paradise for wildlife watchers and safaris here provide a unique and unforgettable experience.  Many of the waters are seasonal but some are permanent rivers, and mokoros (traditional poled canoes) glide silently past papyrus groves and iridescent flocks of birds.

The Chobe River to the north of the Delta is within easy driving distance of Victoria Falls and attracts some of Africa's largest elephant herds. South of the Delta the incredible Nxai and Makgadikgadi pans, shimmer in the African sun eventually giving way to the stunning sand dunes of the Kalahari and its Bushmen communities.  In this pristine and spectacular environment tourism must be unobtrusive.  Safari lodges are small and eco-friendly and visitor numbers are strictly limited.

Botswana Safaris - Travel Tips

  • April to October is regarded as the best time to safari in Botswana, after the big rains, although bird watching enthusiasts often find that December to May is particularly good.
  • The waters of the Okavango Delta are usually at their highest in the middle of the dry season from late July to early August.
  • Game viewing in Botswana tends to be a relaxed affair and it is an excellent destination for a family safari.
  • Safaris in Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa or Zambia can easily be combined with Botswana.

Botswana Safaris - A Personal View

Jo NetscherBefore visiting Botswana, a guide in Zambia once told me that the cape turtle dove’s call was supposedly chanting, ‘Bots-wana, Bots-wana, Bots-wana.'

Now whenever I watch any wildlife safari documentary I can always hear the turtle dove in the background promoting safaris in Botswana with its two syllable call.

And what’s not to promote? This is probably one of the most famous African safari destinations and is where I was lucky enough to explore the channels of the Okavango Delta by mokoro (dug out canoe) and by boat safaris, be wowed by the game and the birdlife in the Linyanti region, and lastly discover the alien habitat of the Makgadikgadi Pans by quad bike.

Botswana Safaris - Ideas You Might Not Have Thought About

Botswana - Bushmen Safaris   Bushmen Safaris
A conventional wildlife safari combined with a few nights at a traditional Bushmen community in the western Kalahari gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the Bushman culture. A highlight of the tour is a guided bush walk, discovering how the community manage the hunting and gathering, and thus gain a small insight into their unique way of life. Authentic grass shelters, cleverly designed to provide the normal comfort of a safari camp, accommodate visitors to the community. This rare experience offers visitors a dignified and culturally sensitive experience with an almost extinct people.

Botswana - game viewing in lush surroundings from Duma Tau   Green Season Superb Value Deals.
Take advantage of superb value prices at some of Botswana’s best destinations by traveling in the green season from March to May. This time of year is spectacular, everywhere bursting with new life, lush green vegetation, vivid colors and dramatic African skies. The channels and lagoons are full, and this is when birders love to view the migratory birds in exotic breeding plumage. Game viewing is also excellent since the wildlife and young are pushed together into the drier areas.
