Combining two camp experiences offers an affordable way to ride in different terrains and wildlife giving you two very different contrasts and a complete ‘Big 5’ experience.  On this safari you will ride in the Dinaka Reserve in South Africa’s Waterberg Mountains along the Limpopo River in the Tuli Block, Botswana. Cantering along dry river beds, jumping the fallen trees, and some fast gallops alongside wildlife can be expected.

Guests will spend four nights with Horizon Horseback Safaris (South Africa) and four nights with Limpopo Valley Safaris (Botswana) as part of the The Big Five Safari. It is likely that you will see hippo, giraffe, rhino, zebra, buffalo and others during your stay in South Africa.  Over the border in Botswana while on horseback, you have an opportunity to encounter elephant, lion and leopard. There are some varying terrain and the safari is experienced at multiple paces, so you will need to be a confident rider to consider this safari. You need to have some ‘stick-ability’ as close viewing of elephants is one of the highlights.

Limpopo Valley Horse safaris has tents on their mobile safari with a team of staff that caters to your needs while the Dinaka Safari lodge offers and smart and permanent accommodation.

Big Five Riding Safaris – A Personal View

On this eight day safari I enjoyed some simply exceptional game viewing from horseback. The two locations work perfectly - the first four days spent riding in the shadow of the stunning Waterberg Mountains, viewing large herds of plains game and rhino (I saw a huge “crash” of 18 rhino here); while the last four days are spent riding from camp to camp, covering a vast area in the Mashatu Game Reserve which is just teaming with elephant, amongst other big game.  This has to be one of the best African riding safaris there is.
