Kizingo
Kizingo lodge is a wonderful coastal retreat on Lamu Island just thirty minutes from the airstrip (by boat). Owned and run by Mary Jo and Louis Van Aardt, Kizingo is situated at the end of the eight mile white sand beach that stretches all the way from Kizingo to Shela. The eight beautifully appointed thatched cottages (bandas) have magnificent ocean views and are well-separated from each other. Enjoy your morning tea watching the local fishing dhows tacking south towards Malindi. At Kizingo lodge you can be as private or as sociable as you choose, opting to dine on your own veranda or joining other guests in the dining room and bar. The calm waters of the Lamu channel are wonderful for swimming and you can snorkel among the local coral reefs. During the winter months, guests may be lucky enough to have the opportunity to swim with dolphins. It's possible to explore the architecture and restaurants in the nearby historic Lamu town and cycling to some of the nearby mainland African villages can also be arranged. From October to June, green turtles arrive on the beach and lay their eggs. Deep-sea fishing and sunset dhow trips can also be organized by the lodge.
