Loisaba Star Beds
Loisaba is a large private area in the Northern Territories of Kenya, the landscape here is more varied than the southern plains and offers numerous different wildlife habitats. A unique experience available at Loisaba Lodge is the opportunity to sleep outside in the bush. The 'Star Beds' are big platforms built on stilts high off the ground. Guests have a comfortable double bed under a thatched roof. The beds are so called because they can be wheeled out from the room onto the platform so that you can sleep outside under the stars. The rooms all have adjoining bathrooms. There is a fire pit and a communal thatched dining area. At Loisaba there are two groups of three rooms each with its own platform. One group is at Kiboko, a twenty minute drive from the lodge, where the "Star Beds" are situated among a kopje of rocks in a beautiful valley overlooking the 'Kiboko' waterhole. The other group is about a forty minute drive away at Koija, where the Star beds have a stunning setting on the banks of the Ewaso N'giro River and can only be reached on foot via a narrow bridge from the opposite bank. This location is part of an exciting joint venture between the local Laikipiak Masai people and Loisaba lodge and guests are hosted by members of the local Koija community. Big game is not as abundant here as in some other areas of Kenya but this is home to elephant, hippo, leopard and buffalo. The lodge also offers horseback riding, river rafting, camel riding, and even helicopter trips. Alternately you can simply relax at the spa, enjoying the magnificent views across the plains towards Mount Kenya. Quad biking is available at extra cost, the income generated from this activity benefits the local school - so far three new classrooms have been built with the proceeds.
