Offbeat Safaris

Offbeat Safaris based in Kenya's Great Rift Valley is well known for running adventurous riding safaris in remote wilderness areas. Most rides start from the colonial home, Deloraine, in the Rift Valley and stretch as far as Masailand and Laikipia, and it quite possible to ride for 200 miles without seeing a fencepost. The landscape is typical of East Africa, open plains and grassland interspersed with bush, ideal for long canters and gallops. Nothing beats viewing the African wilderness from horseback, your horse becomes another pair of eyes and ears and they don't miss a trick. There is something thrilling about cantering alongside giraffe or wildebeest or just blending into the bush with no car or sound of an engine for miles.

The horses are well schooled and either thoroughbreds or thoroughbred cross, all have been tried for polo and even the best polo ponies go on safari. The horses are individual, responsive, tough and fit. Each day guests spend about 4-6 hours (covering 20-30 miles) in the saddle. Picnic lunches are carried in saddle bags and there maybe some walking on foot over rough terrain. All riders should be of good riding ability and be comfortable at all paces, riding is through big game country and it is not unusual to encounter dangerous game. The accommodation varies on safari.
