Ol Donyo Wuas Riding
Ol Donyo Wuas lodge is a wonderful private lodge located in the Chyulu Hills in southern Kenya with panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Off the beaten tourist track and on the doorstep of Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks, this area is home to some of the biggest tusking elephant alive in Africa today. Riding is just one of the activities here and the pace is varied, with plenty of opportunity for long canters along the open plains, jumping logs or fallen trees, and also some more technical riding up and down the hills. For more serious riders see the Ride Kenya page.
You will find South African boerpeds, thoroughbreds & crosses and Somali ponies here. They are very well schooled and cater for riders of all abilities. Guests are able to embark on either morning and/or evening rides or full day rides with a picnic lunch, returning to the lodge for the night.
The nights are spent in a luxurious lodge, built from local stone, volcanic rock, olive wood and thatch. There are seven en-suite cottages which come with their own verandahs and un-spoilt views of Kilimanjaro which is located only 55 kms away. There is a central sitting and dining room as well as a lovely swimming pool. Animals come to drink from the waterhole below, which provides entertainment for guests while relaxing at the lodge. A wide variety of wildlife can be found in this area but due to the low number of tourists, the game can by shyer than in other areas. You need to work a little harder than you might in the Masai Mara, but you will be rewarded with sightings of gerenuk, hyena, bat ear foxes, lion, huge elephant, jackal, wild dog and large numbers of zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and other antelope. The combination of plains and hills around Ol Donyo Wuas is stunning, and there is the chance to walk and take vehicle based game drives.
