Kaya Mawa
Kaya Mawa enjoys a beautiful location on the south-western tip of the island of Likoma, one of two small islands in Northern Lake Malawi. The island is small and sparsely populated, inhabited by only by the local fishing community. Kaya Mawa was built among mango trees and ancient baobabs on the shores of the lake beside a crescent shaped beach.
Accommodation & Facilities
The accommodations are in individual cottages, each with an amazing four poster hand-crafted mahogany bed, a bathroom with a hot shower, and a sunken double tub with a wonderful view over the lake. From the private terrace, there is a path leading down to the shore. There is also a honeymoon cottage on its own tiny island, which is said to contain the largest bed in Malawi. There is a beach bar with comfy armchairs, hammocks, and cushions, or alternatively there is the main bar set on a deck beside a lovely waterfall-fed rock pool, ideal for a cooling dip. Dinner at Kaya Mawa can be served on your own private terrace or on the out in the open on the roof deck so you can dine under the stars.
Wildlife & Activities
If guests ever tire of relaxing on the beach at Kaya Mawa, scuba diving, wind surfing and water skiing can be arranged. Lake Malawi has some of the best fresh water diving to be found anywhere in the world. Excursions to Mozambique are available from here and dhow boat trips and mokoros (dug out canoes) are a great way to explore the area around the lake. Also located on the island is St Peter's Cathedral built at the end of the nineteenth century and the third largest cathedral in Central Africa.
