Okonjima Bush Camp
Half an hour’s drive off the main road between Windhoek and Etosha lies Okonjima Bush Camp. It is also accessible by plane, as it is equipped with its own air strip. The 54 acre area is mostly made up of acacia bush scrubland with some open grassland. The accommodations at Okonjima Bush Camp consist of 10 spacious, comfortable thatch rooms, all with private bathroom facilities. There is canvas on one side of the room that can be opened up to see the views. The dining room, lounge and bar make up the main area, which is also under thatch. This overlooks a waterhole, which is lit up at night. There is also a small swimming pool. Okonjima is home to the charitable Africat Foundation, whose aim is to rescue and rehabilitate into the wild, cheetahs that have been injured or brought up by hand. Leopard research is also carried out on a number of second and third generation leopards who have always lived in the area and are radio collared. For visitors who are only staying one night, the lodge may arrange an evening drive, tracking a collared leopard using telemetry, followed by an introduction to the rehabilitation program in the morning. Guests staying for longer may also track cheetah on foot and have the chance to view Bushman paintings.
