Gorilla's Nest
Gorilla’s Nest is situated near to the entrance of Parc National des Volcans, in the north of Rwanda. The rooms are set around a large courtyard within a grove of trees. The views of the surrounding countryside and the volcanoes are magnificent. This is the perfect base for gorilla tracking, due to the lodge’s close proximity to the national park. There are 40 rooms, all with adjoining bathrooms. In the public areas are a large bar and restaurant. Parc National des Volcans is located on the borders of the neighbouring countries of Uganda and DR Congo and is named after the string of volcanoes to which it is home. This is the national park in which Dian Fossey carried out her pioneering studies of mountain gorillas before her murder by poachers in 1985. The film, “Gorillas in the Mist,” released three years after her death, made her work known to a mass audience. There are currently five families of gorillas living in the park, and gorilla tracking is certainly the main attraction here. The park is also home to seventy-six mammal species, including a community of golden monkeys. Nature walks and volcano climbs can be arranged with an experienced national park guide, and it is also possible to visit the site of Dian Fossey’s research station and her tomb.
