236 Hurumzi (formerly Emerson and Green) is located in the heart of Stone Town, on Zanzibar, with fabulous views of the Indian Ocean from the Tower Top restaurant on its roof. Although a relatively new hotel, having opened after serious refurbishment in 1994, it is an old building, having previously belonged to a rich merchant. Many of the original furnishings are still present as well as a number of period pieces designed to give the feel of a set from the Arabian Nights.
It has just 16 rooms, each with en-suite facilities, which in many cases have huge stone baths. The feeling of palatial comfort continues in the bedrooms with large Zanzibari beds with jasmine flowers on the pillows at bedtime and fresh flowers in the room.
With charismatic owners and a short walk from the sights of Stone Town, 236 Hurumzi is a great base from which to explore the surrounding area.
