Matemwe
Matemwe is situated on the north east coast of Zanzibar, about an hour by car from Stone Town. Matemwe is one of the most scenic places on the east coast of Zanzibar, where phones and television sets seem to belong to another planet.
The camp has just 12 double bed bungalows, all of which directly overlook the Indian Ocean. Hot water and lighting - both powered by the sun - are available while the kerosene lamps at night create a cosy atmosphere. The twelve suites are comfortably furnished and self contained. The menu is mainly sea foods, and the kitchen has been praised for its high quality and diversity in mixing the local cuisine with the European. In the morning you will find a coffee tray on your veranda, so that you can sit back, wake up slowly and enjoy the sunrise before breakfast.
Recreation in this area is leisurely and tranquil. Instead of speed boats or water skiing, you can sail with the local "Ngalawas", (Traditional fishing boats with wooden outriggers), snorkel or dive at the unique and colourful Mnemba reef. For the lucky ones, whales, dolphins or sea turtles might be spotted at close range. Matemwe Bungalows runs a fully equipped PADI recognised dive centre.
