Ol Donyo Lodge Riding
Ol Donyo Lodge is a wonderful private lodge located in the Chyulu Hills in southern Kenya, providing spectacular panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Off the beaten tourist track and on the doorstep of Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks, this area is home to some of the biggest tusking elephant alive in Africa today. At Ol Donyo Lodge, riding is just one of the many activities available, and the pace is varied, with plenty of opportunity for long canters along the open plains, jumping logs or fallen trees, and also some more technical riding up and down the hills. For more serious, experienced riders, see the Ride Kenya page. Here you will find variety of horses: South African boerpeds, thoroughbreds, thoroughbred crosses, and Somali ponies. They are very well-trained and can accommodate riders of all abilities. Guests are able to choose when they want to ride, as rides embark each morning, evening, or full day rides with a picnic lunch, returning to the lodge for the night. Accommodations at the lodge are luxurious, with a maximum of 22 people in seven separate, private cottages. Some cottages have two beds, while others are four bed cottages with their own private lounges and swimming pool, perfect for families or small groups. All bedrooms are spacious with superb views, in-suite bathroom, shower and bath, flush toilet, and an additional outdoor shower. A wide variety of wildlife can be found in this area, but because the lodge is situated off the beaten path, the game can by shyer than in other areas where there are many tourists. For your extra effort in search of wildlife, you will be rewarded with sightings of gerenuk, hyena, bat ear foxes, lion, huge elephant, jackal, wild dog and large numbers of zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and other antelope. The combination of plains and hills around Ol Donyo Lodge is stunning, and there is the chance to walk and take vehicle based game drives.
