Ride Kenya, located in the foothills of the Chyulu Hills in southern Kenya (and close to Ol Donyo Wuas Lodge), provides access to 1.4 million acres of idyllic riding country with Mount Kilimanjaro providing a stunning backdrop. The terrain in the area ranges from to sloping wooded hills to large open plains, with the occasional need to cross old lava flows.  The climate is perfect for riding on warm, sunny days and cool evenings.

There are 20 well-trained horses (Boerperds, thoroughbreds and Somali ponies) that are accostomed to the Big 5 and all other wildlife. Pactrick and Nicola are your guides on the four to six hour rides that embark in morning and late afternoon, combined with a guided bush walk or game drive in the evening. On some rides, guests will ride between camps, always with lunch provided. Guests need to be comfortable at all paces and fit enough to ride for between four and six hours each day.  The pace is set by guests’ ability, and there are plenty of opportunities for close encounters with game, long canters, galloping and some jumping.

The accommodations on the riding safaris are in large and spacious mobile tents, complete with in-suite bathrooms with a shower and short drop toilet. Lanterns and torches provide the light at night and toiletries including linen, soap and towels are provided. A separate dining tent is used for all meals in camp. On staff is a cook, waiter, representatives, and a groomer for the horses. The staff takes care of all the domestic chores, ensuring you have heated water for showers and excellently prepared meals, and they are also responsible for putting up and striking the camp, feeding, grooming and tacking up the horses. The horses are tethered at night on a picket line strung between trees and a night guard keeps watch for inquisitive lions.

Any riders who prefer the option of a lodge based riding vacation can spend their entire vacation at Ol Donyo Wuas Lodge and then ride out each day.
