Lewa Borana Wildlife Census
This is a rare opportunity to take part in Kenya’s annual wildlife census. Participate in the first-ever census safari at the famous Lewa Borana Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. Join the wildlife conservation census from 2nd to 9th March, limited to just 16 guests. The seven night safari includes one night half board in Nairobi, three nights full board at Lewa Wilderness, three nights full board at Borana Lodge, internal flights and road transfers. You’ll spend a week with the ranger team, hands on helping them track, locate and count game species – including rhino and lion – for the annual mammal wildlife census. Take part in the conservation activities by day and return to luxurious safari lodge accommodation, wonderful conversation, fabulous food and drinks each evening.
Itinerary Summary
- Day 1 Fly form UK to Jomo Kenyatta Airport Kenya with 1 night at The Emakoko
- Days 2-4 Fly to Lewa Conservancy from Wilson Airport, 3 nights at Lewa Wilderness
- Days 5-7 Road transfer to Borana Lodge, Laikipia for 3 nights
- Day 8 Fly to Nairobi Wilson Airport and connect to international flight returning to the UK
Day 1 Nairobi Arrival -The Emakoko, Nairobi National Park
On arrival at Nairobi International Airport you will be met and driven to Emakoko Lodge on the edge of the Nairobi National Park. Set amid beautiful scenery with abundant plains game and birdlife, it is a spectacular start to your safari. Conveniently situated less than 45 minutes from the International and Wilson airports, this boutique lodge comprises 10 beautifully appointed rooms each with a private verandah. There is a pool overlooking the river and there is a chance of seeing hippo grazing on the lawn in the early morning and evening. Before you leave Nairobi you will be able to visit the famous Daphne Sheldrick elephant orphanage and get to meet the baby elephants you have sponsored.
Days 2-4 Nairobi – Lewa Wilderness
Later today you will be transferred to Wilson airport for the flight to Lewa. Lewa Wilderness, situated in the wildlife-rich eastern corner of the 62,000 acre Lewa Downs Conservancy, is the Craig family home. This area has the highest concentration of rhinos in East Africa. Over the next two days you will:
- Take part in the tracker dogs demo and a NPR exercise
- Tour the radio operations room
- See the revolutionary ‘elephant corridor’ in action
- Learn about the Lewa education programme and visit the local schools
- Visit the Conservation Education Centre
- Assist with community programmes such as the wildlife grazing programme, healthcare clinics and water projects
Days 5-7 Lewa-Borana Lodge
Borana is a privately owned and run by the Dyer family in the remote Laikipia area. Borana takes its name from the native Boran cattle farmed on these arid grasslands. The lodge has a spectacular setting on a hillside in the shadow of Mount Kenya’s jagged peaks. Over the next two days you will:
- Take part in the annual Lewa/Borana Game Census
- Monitor and track rhino and lion with the radio telemetry receivers
- Join the scouts on a walking safari to track and identify rhino using ear notch diagrams
- Track lion using the whisker spot identity method
- Join Sam Taylor, Chief Conservation Officer on his ranger deployments and gathering of intelligence reports
- Mountain bike checking the electric boundary fence voltages and any damage
- Visit the Masai on a cultural excursion
- Attend a lecture by conservationist and MD of Borana Conservancy, Michael Dyer
- Visit to the Permaculture farm and butchery with safari guides Jack and Llewellyn Dyer
Day 8 Borana-Nairobi Departure
After breakfast this morning you will be picked up and taken to Nanyuki airstrip and flown to Wilson airport, Nairobi. Later you will be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta for your flight back to the UK.
Price:
The price for this safari is from £4,565 per person and includes: seven nights safari accommodation, all shared activities, internal transfers and meals, drinks and laundry while on safari as indicated. This is is a rare opportunity to witness and join in the behind the scenes action, and make a difference while on safari. International flights are excluded.
