Maps of Kilimanjaro and Lemosho Route

Lemosho Route - Climb Summary

You will begin your trek through lush rainforest prior to hiking to the edge of a volcano, here you will get your first glimpse of Kilimanjaro’s peak.  This route will be most enjoyed by those looking for a slower, more isolated climb with breathtaking landscapes along the way.  With extra time to reach Kilimanjaro’s summit, this nine night climb provides a very high success rate.

To provide a safe and comfortable climb you will be accompanied by a large Kilimanjaro climbing team, which includes a lead guide, assistant guide, cook and several porters.  We also offer three different levels of comfort and equipment to camp with throughout your climb.

Lemosho Route - Day 1 - Arusha
You will be picked up and transferred to the Arusha Hotel to stay the night, that afternoon you will receive a full briefing by your guide and assisted with your final preparations.

Lemosho Route - Day 2 - Forest
You will be shuttled to the entrance of the Kilimanjaro National Park in the morning where you will start your climb.  Your day will start with a walk through the forest at the foot of the mountain and lead you to your campgrounds at about 2,750m.

Lemosho Route - Day 3 - Shira
Today’s trek will take you up the rim of the Shira volcano, you will notice that the higher you climb the less vegetation is present yet there will be an increasing number of high altitude plants.

Your campsite will be at the edge of an ancient volcano where at about 3,500m you will get your first glimpse of Kilimanjaro’s peak.

Lemosho Route - Day 4 - Shira
The hike today will traverse through the Shira Plateau, which is the flat caldera of an ancient volcano which would have been larger than Kilimanjaro itself.  If the weather permits you will be treated to awesome views of Kibo and the glaciers of this area, though heavy fog is usually present blocking the views.

You will reach camp by lunchtime providing you some time to unwind and also allow for a quick acclimatization walk.

Lemosho Route - Day 5 – Lava Tower
Today you will be exiting Kilimanjaro’s heath zone for a three to five hour climb into the alpine desert, which is quite unwelcoming with little vegetation, and its freezing nights and scorching days.  At around 4,600m you will rest at the Lava Tower camp, here you can also climb the Lava Tower in the afternoon if you like.

Lemosho Route - Day 6 – Karanga Valley
You will begin your day making your way down the Barranco Valley before climbing the Barranco Wall.  As you continue your climb you will make your way into the Karanga Valley where you will camp and have the option of relaxing for the rest of the day or partaking in a small hike to see the beautiful views of nearby glaciers.

Lemosho Route - Day 7 - Barafu
Today’s trek will last roughly four hours before you encounter the final steep and slow portion that will lead to Barafu Hut, here you can capture spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak.

Later in the afternoon you will go on an acclimatization hike, where you will trek a little higher before heading back down to camp.

Lemosho Route - Day 8 - Crater
The day starts with an early rising where you will climb up the edge of Kilimanjaro’s Kibo crater.  With thin air and oxygen levels low it is imperative that today’s trek is done slowly.  You will make your way up to the rim then head back down to camp just before lunchtime.

The rest of the day will allow you time to relax and acclimate yourself to the altitude followed by dinner and an early bedtime.

Lemosho Route - Day 9 - Summit
With a good nights sleep you should be energized for an early morning rise and hike to Kilimanjaro’s peak, arriving at Uhuru Peak just as the sun rises.  After everyone has taken photos you will make your way down scree slopes passing Barafu camp and taking a lunch break at Millenium camp.  After lunch you will be treated to slower pace as you descend down to Mweka camp for your final night on Kilimanjaro.

Lemosho Route - Day 10 - Arusha
The last descent will take you through Kilimanjaro’s heath section and rainforest prior to arriving at the gate of the national park.  At this point you will be shuttled to the Arusha Hotel by vehicle where you can celebrate your amazing journey.  Take a dive in the pool, savor that long awaited hot shower, or grab a couple of drinks at the bar, the decision is yours.

Lemosho Route – Day 11
If your African safari ends here you will be shuttled to the airport for your departure, or picked up from the hotel to continue your African vacation.
