Aardvark’s Top Ten Guides

The names of Robin Pope, Richard Bonham and the late David Rattray will always by synonymous with Africa and superb guiding.  What tends to be forgotten is that there’s now a new generation of guides coming through – they may not be the famous names of old, but we think they’re every bit as good.

The current Aardvark hotlist includes:

Grant and Brent Reed, Botswana
Highly entertaining brothers, experts on snakes and great story tellers, who lead truly superb mobile safaris in Botswana’s Okavango Delta and beyond.

Ant Baber, Ant's Nest, South AfricaAnt Baber, Ant’s Nest, South Africa
Great bear of a man, wonderful horseman, fine raconteur and has inspired any number of children with a passion for Africa.

Rob Caskie, Fugitive’s Drift, South Africa
Already good before David Rattray’s untimely death, but has taken over the mantle of leading the Battlefield tours at Fugitive’s Drift superbly.

Debs Tittle – Robin Pope Safaris, Zambia
Protégée of Robin Pope who now leads exciting walking safaris in Zambia’s South Luangwa. A consummate professional and excellent host, her trips are much sought after.

Kerry Glen, Karisia Walking Safaris, Kenya Kerry Glen, Kenya
One of only a few female guides and at the top of her tree. She leads wonderful walking safaris in northern Kenya with her husband and team of local Samburu.

Schoeman Brothers, Namibia
Famous for their extraordinary Skeleton Coast flying safaris. One of Africa’s real highlights.

David Njapit – Offbeat Mara, Kenya
We have to declare a personal interest here as David is one of the guides we have sponsored through the Koiyaki guide school. An up and coming guide, currently based at Offbeat Mara, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Masai Mara.

Rod Tether – Kutandala, Zambia
They don’t get much better than Rod – a truly classic guide with unbelievable knowledge and a superb birder.

Sacha Toronyi, Beho Beho – Tanzania
A professional Zimbabwean guide with plenty of fascinating tales to tell. A bit like an African Crocodile Dundee and well known for his exciting and tremendously enjoyable trips.

James Sengeny, Rekero, Kenya James Sengeny, Rekero, Kenya
A Masai superstar. He accompanied John and Charlotte to the USA a couple of years ago and is one of the best you can get in Kenya.
