Visit Zimbabwe with Award Wining Travel Writer Douglas Rogers

A couple of months ago, we recommended Douglas Rogers' highly acclaimed memoir of life in Zimbabwe, The Last Resort. The book has become so beloved that we've teamed up with the author to offer a unique 12-day tour through Zimbabwe in May 2011.

lastresort.jpgIn The Last Resort, Rogers tells the extraordinary tale of his parents' struggle to hold on to the family game farm and backpacker lodge in Zimababwe's Eastern Higlands. Hailed as "Vibrant, tragic, surprisingly funny – the best book about ordinary life to have come out of the Mugabe dicatorship," (The New York Times), the book tells the very human story of Rogers' parents, and a heroic cast of characters who gather around their lodge bar to drink, deal dimaonds, swap recipes, and plot comebacks.

For four days, Rogers will host a small group through the spectacular Eastern Highlands of his birth where they will meet the major characters in the book, sip beer around the storied Drifters Bar, and hear first-hand accounts of life in Zimbabwe from farmers, game guides, activists, money dealers, and even witch doctors.

After the literary highlights of the east, the group will fly together to Hwange, Zimbabwe's premier National Park, with its wonderful diversity of wildlife, including all the Big Five, and one of the highest concerntrations of elephant in Africa. The group will stay at the classical Makalolo Plains, one of the finest safari camps in Africa, and explore the park on foot or vehicle accompanied by professional guides.

The finale willo be three nights at the world famous Victoria Falls Hotel, with its awe inspiring view of the Falls from its colonial veranda. Take a sunset cruise down the Zambezi, see the widlife in Zambezi National Park, and – for the truly daring – white water raft the great river. The tour will end with a "boma" dinner under the stars, with traditional Zimbabwean food, dancers, and fittingly, words from a local Sangoma (story teller).
