Namibia Safaris

Map of Namibia

The magnificent scenery of Namibia, with its vast desert and continuous blue skies is enough to inspire anyone. The salt pans of the Etosha National Park attract a variety of game, but that is only part of the Namibian experience. The real highlight of a safari here is to experience the ongoing struggle of plants, animals and people to survive fin such a harsh environment.

The desert adapted species here are truly unique. A typical Namibian safari will include the remote wilderness of the Kaokoland or Damaraland areas, the vast landscapes of the Namib-Nakluft desert, the world’s most spectacular sand dunes at Sossusvlei, and the abundant game in the pans of Etosha.

The haunting shipwrecks on the skeleton coast, the vibrant plant life of the Kalahari, and the remote communities of the Himba people, living in the Kunene valley, as they have done for centuries, can also be experienced by those who want to look further.

Namibia Safari - Travel Tips

  • The summer, from November to March, is very hot. There is never much rain here and Namibia can be visited all year round.
  • There is a good network of roads, though they are mostly dirt tracks. This makes Namibia ideal for self-drive vacations and many of the areas of interest are outside national parks.
  • There are some magnificent flying safaris, which take in many of Namibia’s highlights. These are perfect for those with a limited timescale.

Namibia Safaris - A Personal View

Victoria LangmeadI was totally oblivious, prior to my first visit, to the extent to which I would be captivated by this spectacular, sparsely populated country. Nothing I’d seen or read did anything to prepare me for its incredible beauty and wild remoteness.

I was mesmerized by the ever-changing colors and the cloudless blue skies. The sheer vastness, sense of space, and endless horizons are a photographers dream. I climbed the vast Sossusvlei sand dunes, tracked desert adapted rhino and elephant in the harsh and remarkably inhospitable Kaokoland. I kayaked with Cape Fur Seals in the Atlantic and photographed the eerie shipwrecks strewn along the wild Skeleton Coast. Game highlights included driving myself through the game rich Etosha National Park and bird-watching on the northern most Kunene River.

People want different things from their African adventure and I believe that Namibia, arguably more so than any other country we sell, has not just a bit but a lot of everything to keep even the most regular visitor to Africa happy. I merely scratched the surface of what this captivating country has to offer and look forward returning so I can carry on exploring its unique wonders where I left off.
