Matemwe Retreat

Matemwe is located on the beautiful north east coast of Zanzibar, about an hour by car from Stone Town.  Matemwe is one of the most scenic places on the east coast of Zanzibar, a long way from telephones and TV sets.

Matemwe Retreat looks over the stunning Mnemba Atoll with its own private beach.  The retreat consists of three luxurious rooms; all rooms have sun and shade decks and a private plunge pool on a beautiful roof terrace overlooking the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.  Breakfast is served on the room’s private verandah. Lunches and dinners can be enjoyed in Matemwe’s main restaurant, but can also be served in the privacy of the room, on the verandah or on the roof terrace, under the African stars.  The very spacious Retreat rooms also feature a private cocktail bar, an air-conditioned bedroom and a beautiful bathroom with double basins, a shower and a bath overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Recreation in this area is leisurely and tranquil.  Instead of speed boats or water skiing, you can sail with the local “Ngalawas”, (Traditional fishing boats with wooden outriggers), snorkel or dive at the unique and colorful Mnemba reef.  For the lucky ones, whales, dolphins or sea turtles might be
