5 Okavango Delta Safari Hotspots
Choosing just 5 Okavango Delta safari hotspots is tricky as there are so many brilliant camps to choose from in Botswana.
Don’t hate me. I’m going to make some subjective decisions here. The truth is I could list fifteen safari camps in the Okavango Delta that are great for wildlife. I could also tell you why any one of six are brilliant for families. But blogs work better when you’re opinionated, so the powers that be have allowed me one ‘hotspot’ in each category.
If you think you know better, or own/manage the camp I should have given the accolades to, please argue for your choice in the comments below. I’m not necessarily going to change the article if you win the debate, but I might.
1. Best Okavango Delta camp for wildlife – Mombo Camp
Mombo Camp and its little sibling Little Mombo – located in a concession on Chief’s Island deep inside the Moremi Game Reserve, this camp is a superb place for predators of all sorts including lion and leopard, as well as elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and antelope of every type. There is so much wildlife here that many guests comment that you hardly need to leave camp.
2. Best Okavango Delta camp for style – Sandibe
Sandibe – it’s a new lodge built from sustainably sourced timber, with a very clever environmentally friendly design, great comfort and lots of space in the rooms. The appearance of the lodge is unique, contemporary, and refreshingly different from any other in Botswana, or the rest of Africa for that matter, with shingled roofs intended to resemble the scales of a pangolin. As a bonus, it is also in one of the best locations for wildlife viewing.
3. Best Okavango Delta camp for adventure – African Horseback Safaris
African Horseback Safaris – thrilling riding safaris for experienced riders, with plenty of room for fast rides, as well as deep water in places, excellent wildlife viewing, and plenty of other activities such as walking, fishing, boat and mokoro trips, and also game drives. Fill the days with excitement, and enjoy sociable evenings with excellent food and generous hospitality.
4. Best Okavango Delta camp for family safaris – Seba Camp
Seba Camp – located not far from the renowned Abu Camp, is family focused, with family rooms and guides and staff who are highly experienced at hosting guests of all ages. The camp offers numerous activities that are tailored for children and for allowing parents some downtime, with good wildlife viewing too.
5. Best all-round Okavango Delta camp for wildlife, activities and variety – Vumbura Plains
Suite with private plunge pool, Vumbura Plains, Okavango Delta, Wilderness Safaris
Vumbura Plains – set in the very remote and astonishingly beautiful Kwedi concession on the northern edge of the Okavango Delta, Vumbura Plains is a magnificent camp with very luxurious rooms, superb wildlife viewing, good boat and mokoro trips, walking, night drives, helicopter flights, and seasonal balloon flights.
