Bush House
Bush House is a wonderful secluded small ecolodge overlooking Lake Ampitabe on the Pangalanes Canal in eastern Madagascar where fresh water lakes merge with the Indian Ocean. Access is by boat along the old shipping canal with its made waterways interspersed with huge lakes. The lodge is hidden amongst the forest, and from its hillside location you get excellent views. Children of any age are welcome.
Accommodation & Facilities
Much of Bush House is hand built from local materials. There are 15 bungalows, each with their own en-suite bathrooms with hot water, mosquito nets and electricity from the generator from 6-8am and 5-10pm every day. All bungalows have a large terrace with views over the lake. Families of up to four are accommodated in bungalows by adding two additional children’s beds. The main areas include a lounge with a library and also a bar and restaurant, where the menu includes traditional Malagasy, Creole and French dishes.
Eating & Sleeping
There is a children’s menu available and with advance warning earlier mealtimes can be arranged. If there are any specific dietary requests, please advise prior to travel. There are no babysitting facilities here so parents must be responsible for their children at all times.
Wildlife & Activities
Guests at Bush House can explore the beautiful unspoilt surroundings on foot or by boat, or walk in the nearby private reserve to see some of the species protected there including crowned, red-bellied, ring-tailed and black and white ruffed lemurs as well as chameleons, radiated tortoises lemurs, endemic palms, orchids and exotic plants. Some water based activities are also available, including canoeing and sunset boat trips.
Specifically for children …..
The white sand bordering the crystal clear water of the lake directly in front of the hotel is a favourite spot for children. The water is shallow on the lake shore, around 20 – 30 cm, calm and transparent making it a child friendly spot for a swim. There are no age restrictions for canoeing but children must be accompanied by a parent. Life jackets are available.
