Camp Kalahari
Camp Kalahari is an authentic, comfortable tented camp set in a shady grove of trees perched on the rim of an ancient super-lake within the Makgadikgadi salt pans. The laidback little sister of Jack’s and San Camp, Camp Kalahari is relaxed and understated and is one of only three camps in a one million acre private wildlife reserve. Children of all ages are welcome.
Accommodation & Facilities
There are 12 Meru tents, two of which are family units. Each tent has a large en-suite bathroom with running water and a flush loo. The camp is furnished with Moroccan kilims, four poster beds and unusual and attractive furniture from East and Southern Africa, and has a large airy central thatched dining and sitting room, as well as a swimming pool – occasionally visited by elephants who stop by for a drink.The family units comprise of two tents with a shared inter-leading bathroom connecting the two rooms. The twin room can fit an additional rollaway bed so a total of five can be accommodated in the family tents.
Eating & Sleeping
Guests tend to eat together at Camp Kalahari but separate mealtimes and dietary requests can be accommodated with advance warning. A listening service can be provided by a member of staff in camp should parents wish to eat later than the children and should be requested at the time of booking.
Wildlife & Activities
Between December and April, Africa’s second largest herbivore migration comprising thousands of wildebeest and zebra spend several months feeding on the rich new grass in the vicinity of the camp. During the dry season the camp is an ideal base from which to see desert adapted wildlife such as brown hyena and meerkat. Activities at Camp Kalahari include day and night wildlife drives, quad biking (during the dry season only between April and October), walking with habituated meerkats, and guided bush walks with San Bushmen. Horse riding is available at an additional charge, and should be pre-booked.
Specifically for children …
The Camp Kalahari guides are very experienced with guiding families and are all great with kids. All activities on offer at Camp Kalahari can be geared towards children as follows:
• Walks with Zu’/hoasi bushmen.
• Discover the Kalahari Cool Cats – the habituated meerkat family.
• Horseriding is offered to children from eight years.
• Quad biking – children from twelve can drive the quad bikes. Children under 12 years are required to ride the quad bike with a parent.
• Smaller sized helmets are available for children.
