Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp – currently closed
In the shade of an evergreen forest, set on an oxbow lake close to the seasonal Grumeti River, from which it takes its name, Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp is in the Western Corridor of the Serengeti National Park. Children of all ages are welcome although as the lodge in unfenced, adult supervision is required at all times.
Accommodation & Facilities
Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp has ten huge tents including one family suite. Each of the tents have palm thatched roofs and are set a little way back from the water’s edge, whilst the dining and lounge area look directly over it and its hippo pools. The lavishly decorated tents have en-suite facilities and shady verandahs ideal for relaxing. The family tent is made of two spacious tents that are connected by an enclosed walkway which allows easy access between the tents while maintaining complete privacy. Each tent has its own en-suite bathroom and a private veranda. The family suite can accommodate two adults and two children (three children can be provided for on special request). The main dining area is furnished in a sophisticated fashion, with colours that complement the surroundings. The camp has a rim-flow pool and a safari shop.
Eating & Sleeping
The chefs are happy to prepare any foods that children enjoy (e.g. pizza, hamburgers, chicken strips, etc.) and will discuss children’s dietary preferences with parents on arrival. Specific dietary requests can be accommodated with prior notice. Babysitting is available and provided by the housekeeping staff at US$5/hour to be booked on arrival at the lodge.
Wildlife & Activities
There is excellent resident game to be enjoyed during drives from Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp and the wildebeest migration moves through the area on its way from the calving areas to Kenya’s Masai Mara. In camp, troops of colobus monkeys reside in the forest and families of hippos bathe in the pools directly in front of the lodge. Guests can also enjoy a day trip to Lake Victoria.
Specifically for children …
There are lots of activities for kids to do here and for ultimate flexibility a private vehicle can be booked allowing game drives to be tailored to suit the ages of the children (subject to availability and at an additional cost). Activities include:
• Learn bush skills including how to track animals, identify spoor, throw a spear and light a fire the Masai way.
• Bake cupcakes and pizzas with the camp chefs.
• Creating cool kids beaded sunglasses.
• Playing volley ball with the staff.
