Jack's Camp

Jack’s Camp is set among desert palms on the edge of the Makgadikgadi National Park in Botswana. It offers a complete desert experience focusing on species unique to the area such as meerkat, gemsbok, brown hyena and springbok, as well as the geology, archaeology and anthropology of the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi.

Accommodation & Facilities
The ten spacious and stylish tents at Jack’s Camp have comfortable four-poster canopy beds with overhead cooling systems, a wood burning stove, indoor and outdoor showers, flush loos, and a plunge pool on each outside deck.One tent has two en-suite bedrooms and a shared lounge, and is ideal for a family. Meals are served in the superb 1940s style mess tent, which also houses a museum comprising Botswana’s most remarkable collection of artefacts, collected over several decades by the Bousfield family. The camp has a large swimming pool set under a canopy similar to the mess tent with great views of the surrounding plains, and a spa located in its own tent. The child friendly pool has a waist deep shallow end and sloping bottom to the deep end.

Eating & Sleeping
Guests and families tend to eat together at Jacks Camp but separate mealtimes and dietary requests can be accommodated with advance warning. A listening or babysitting service can be provided by one of the camp staff with advance warning. If required this should be arranged at the time of booking.

Wildlife & Activities
The Makgadikgadi Pans are a relic of one of the world’s largest super-lakes that dried up thousands of years ago, where during the dry season clients can use 4×4 quad bikes to travel where conventional vehicles cannot. At this time of year guests can also visit the historical Seven Sisters Baobab Tree, made famous by the explorers Livingstone, Selous and Baines. Unique highlights of a stay here are walking with a family of habituated meerkats, as they go about their daily life, and walking with Bushmen to learn about their lives and how they survive in this harsh land. Year round day and night wildlife drives are a great way to observe desert dwelling wildlife, and during the wet season guests can see the annual zebra and wildebeest migration and seasonal waterfowl breeding sites. Excellent horse riding is also available at an additional charge, and must be pre-booked.

Specifically for children …
The guides here are well experienced with guiding families and are all great with kids. The activities on offer include:
• Walks with Zu’/hoasi bushmen.
• Discover the Kalahari Cool Cats – the habituated meerkat family.
• Horseriding is offered to children from eight years.
• Quad biking – children from twelve can drive the quad bikes. Children under 12 years are required to ride the quad bike with a parent.
• Smaller sized helmets are available for children.
