John’s Camp

John’s Camp has a beautiful setting in a grove of ancient mahogany trees beside the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park. The position of the camp close to the river bank affords fantastic views across the river into Zambia, as well as for several miles up and down stream.

Accommodation and Facilities
John’s Camp is a seasonal camp, open from the beginning of May to the end of November each year, and has six traditional Meru style safari tents spaced well apart. The tents have ensuite bathrooms with open air bucket showers and flush loos, and a wash basin inside. At the front there is a shaded verandah, ideal for watching wildlife by the river or reading. The camp has a mess tent and a fireplace outside. Meals are eaten outside whenever possible, to take advantage of the wonderful scenery and wildlife. For anyone who feels adventurous, a sleep-out platform is a fabulous place to spend a night.

Wildlife and Activities
The activities on offer in Mana Pools include wildlife drives, walking safaris, canoe safaris, fishing, and sleep-outs. The wildlife to be seen here includes lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, eland, crocodile, zebra and wild dog. Walking safaris in Mana Pools are especially rewarding, with much of the wildlife accustomed to seeing people on foot, and fairly relaxed as a result. Canoeing is a wonderfully exciting and relaxing way to experience the Zambezi and its wildlife. The bird watching is superb, with numerous water birds present in addition to the forest and savannah species to be seen. For the more adventurous, a night fly camping can be arranged, sleeping under a mosquito net under the stars, one of the most magical African experiences possible.
