Kaingo Camp

Kaingo is a beautiful camp situated deep within the wilderness of Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park which offers some of the finest wildlife viewing in Africa. Owned by Derek and Juliet Shenton, the camp has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and it’s remoteness allows for an undisturbed and exclusive safari. Derek and Juliet’s staff have worked for many years in the Luangwa Valley and their intimate knowledge of the bush and its wildlife makes every safari a unique experience.  Kaingo welcomes children from 10 years and upwards and will consider children under the age of 10 on a case by case basis.

Accommodation & Facilities
The camp nestles among large ebony trees on the banks of the meandering Luangwa River. The six-well ventilated en-suite chalets are set discretely apart. The lighting is provided by solar power, and the rooms are mosquito proofed with gauze windows and nets above each bed. Five of them are standard chalets and the sixth is the deluxe suite, the most private, which can be converted to a family suite. In this case the lounge area converts into the children’s room, and sleeps three children on ¾ queen beds (or four children on single beds). The lounge/children’s room has an en-suite toilet, there is a door to access the master bedroom, and the indoor/outdoor showers and outdoor bathtub are all accessed through the master bedroom. The master bedroom has a king size bed. The entire chalet has a large veranda  facing the river which can be set up with a table for families where they can choose to dine privately.

The standard chalets can also be adapted for families. A ¾ queen bed can be added to the room for families of three (two adults in a king size bed, one child on the ¾ queen bed). Only one additional bed can be added to the standard chalets so maximum occupancy is three.  Children must always share a chalets with at least one adult as Kaingo is not fenced and wildlife may be encountered within the camp at any time day or night.  Families of four will automatically receive a private vehicle while those of three guests and upwards may receive a private vehicle according to specific rooming arrangements.
Camp life at Kaingo revolves around a large open-sided bar/dining “chitenge” including lounge and campfire area. A special feature is a main deck built out over the river which allows guests to view wildlife coming down to drink. Meals are varied and of a high standard, using fresh produce from the family farm, and cold drinks are at hand from the well-stocked bar.

Eating & Sleeping
Families can arrange separate meal times. These can either be served in the main dining area, or in their chalet. Child friendly food options are available such as home made hamburgers, pizza, as well as traditional Zambian meals. There are no formal childcare facilities so parents must be responsible for their children at all times.

Wildlife & Activities
Kaingo Camp’s safari activities include walking safaris and day and night game drives. Picnics, bush breakfasts and all day game drives can also be arranged. Wildlife viewing from Shenton Safaris’ exclusive network of photographic hides, the Elephant Hide and the Hippo Hide, offers wonderful photographic opportunities.
