Karisia Walking Safaris

Karisia offers tailor-made walking safaris in Laikipia and other remote parts of northern Kenya. The multi-day trips are led either by one of their amazing Samburu guides or if requested by Kenya born guides (and owners of Karisia) Kerry Glen and James Christian. In all cases they are great hosts and incredibly knowledgeable about Kenya’s history, its wildlife, people and landscapes. Walks can be arranged in several parts of Laikipia, or as camel supported expeditions in lesser travelled areas such as the Mathews Range to the north of Mount Kenya.

Accommodation & Facilities
The mobile camp used by Karisia on their safaris is very comfortable with walk-in traditional style safari tents. Each tent is furnished with a large mattress on the floor and a table and chair and basin outside. The basin is filled with hot water in the evenings and mornings. Behind each tent is a loo and a bucket shower, which is filled with hot water upon request. Meals are freshly prepared each day with hand chosen local produce and meats, and all of the cooking is done on a camp fire.  There are three safari styles:

Tumaren Camp is the ‘home camp’ and a luxury tented camp with four tents. Each tent can be configured for a family whereby the tent has a divider dividing the double bed and the two single beds. There is an option to add an extra single bed totalling five beds.

Classic and Luxury Walking Safaris use large traditional canvas tents suitable for two adults or up to three children per tent with single mattresses. Family tents consisting of two tents placed end to end can be provided on request.

The Air Bed and Camel (AirBnC) Walking Safari uses dome tents with gauze roofs for up to two adults or up to three children per tent with single mattresses. A cot is also available.

Eating & Sleeping
The chef is happy to prepare child friendly meals at a time to suit the children. Generally cooking is western style food eg roast chicken, lasagne, pancakes, pizza etc.  Lots of snacks are carried on the walks, including sweets and chocolate.

Wildlife & Activities
As well as being an exhilarating experience in itself, walking through the Kenyan bush with one of Karisia’s expert guides allows guests to experience the smaller things often missed with vehicle based wildlife viewing – the tracks, the plants, the sounds, the smells. You may also be able to climb rocks, track wildlife, and swim in the river, and also enjoy the spontaneity of a private safari with no regulations dictating what you may or may not do.

 Specifically for children ….
• Rock climbing.
• Beading in the afternoons.
• Tracking wildlife on foot.
• Spear making and throwing.
• Playing in the rivers.
• Milking the camels and goats.
• Playing football with the locals.
