Lekkerwater Beach Lodge

Lekkerwater Beach Lodge has a spectacular ocean-side setting in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, on the southern tip of the Western Cape coast. Just three hours’ drive from Cape Town, and a few miles from the most southerly point in Africa, Cape Agulhas, De Hoop has a large expanse of protected coastal waters and 34,000 hectares of fynbos vegetation, sand dunes and wetlands, making it a unique combination. It was once the private retreat of South Africa’s President, and has enjoyed protection from fishing and farming for many years.

Accommodation & Facilities

Lekkerwater Beach Lodge is positioned on the lower slope of a large hill, not far above the beach, and has seven rooms that all have sea views. The rooms have full height front windows to make the most of their setting, wood burning stoves to keep guests warm, ensuite bathrooms, and spacious and cosy bedrooms. The main lodge has a large dining room, lounge and bar, and open interactive kitchen. Weather permitting, meals are eaten outside, and possibly on the beach.

Wildlife & Activities

The activities in De Hoop centre mostly around the rich the foreshore and marine life, with guided walks along 4 miles of private beach, to explore numerous rock pools and the fynbos and grasslands inland. Southern right whales gather in the warm shallow waters of De Hoop between July and November, and choose this safe location to give birth. Shore based whale watching is among the best on earth here, and other species such as bottle nose dolphin can readily be seen. De Hoop also has good terrestrial wildlife which includes Cape mountain zebra, eland, bontebok, rhebok, ostrich, leopard, and caracal, and more than 260 species of birds. Lekkerwater Beach Lodge is an excellent base from which to explore this fascinating part of South Africa.
