Lewa Wilderness

Situated in the wildlife-rich eastern corner of the 62,000 acre Lewa Downs Conservancy in Kenya is the Craig family home, Lewa Wilderness. Guests have been entertained in luxury here in northern Kenya for the past 30 years. The lodge is set on a hillside overlooking the plains and mountains of Kenya’s northern rangelands stretching away to the horizon. All ages are welcome and everyone will be very warmly received at this lovely family home.

Accommodation & Facilities
Each of the three Garden Cottages has two en-suite bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and the other with twin queen-sized beds. There is a cosy sitting room with a fireplace for chilly evenings. The Hillside Family Cottage has two en-suite bedrooms, a central lounge and fireplace, outdoor verandah and private plunge pool. There are five further cottages, each with an en-suite double bedroom and lounge area with room for a child’s bed. The lodge has a large dining room and lounge, although most meals are eaten outdoors. The food is wholesome and organically grown in a large garden on the property. There is also a tennis court, gym and a salt-water pool. The pool is solar heated and child friendly. The shallow end is 1m and the whole pool is no deeper than 1.5m. There are steps and a small drop off into the pool.

Eating & Sleeping
It is easy to arrange for children to eat in their rooms or earlier in the main dining room. The chefs are very flexible and good at producing a wide variety of child friendly meals such as pizzas, fish and chips, jacket potatoes, chicken, steak and chips and various pasta dishes. There are very reliable nannies on site for an extra $30 per day.

Wildlife and Activities
A professional guiding team leads guests on customised daily safaris and educates them about flora, fauna, animal behaviour, conservation, Lewa history, and more. The Lewa Conservancy is part of the Mt Kenya UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has the highest rhino concentration in East Africa and a large number of predators. Guests can take day and night wildlife drives, guided bush walks, ride horses and camels, have breakfast and lunch in the bush, go hiking or jogging with a Masai warrior, as well as learning more about the conservancy and the neighbouring Ngare Ndare Forest. Fly camping is wonderful way for a family to experience this beautiful place, and needs to be pre-booked. Scenic flights in a Waco bi-plane are a fantastic way to see this spectacular landscape, and can be arranged for an additional charge.
