Lion Camp

Lion Camp is a seasonal, permanent lodge in the remote north-east of South Luangwa National Park. The camp is beautifully located on the banks of an ox bow lagoon in an area of the park with few other camps. The lagoon retains a small amount of water throughout the year ensuring a constant water source for wildlife even in the driest months. The views across the open grasslands from the camp are always dotted with species such as impala, warthog, zebra, waterbuck and puku and in the absence of fences, animals move freely through the camp.

Accommodation & Facilities
Lion Camp has eight luxury suites and two deluxe canvas-and-thatch suites with large bedrooms, private outside decks, and views of the lagoon and plains beyond. The en-suite bathrooms are set to the side of the bedroom, and have views of the plain. The beds have Evening Breeze cooling units over them for added comfort. There are no family tents but there is room for one child on a daybed in the deluxe suites.

The main lodge area is spacious and airy and has a bar, dining area and lounge with wonderfully comfortable sofas. To the front a large deck and infinity pool with steps into it overlook the flood plains providing a perfect spot to enjoy the sun and watch the abundant wildlife. A central boma and a snooker table complete the facilities. Meals are often eaten under the African skies, and dinner beneath the stars is especially memorable.

Eating & Sleeping
Parents and children eat together communally here and there isn’t a children’s menu. There are no babysitting or childcare facilities so parents need to be responsible for their children at all times.

Wildlife & Activities
Activities at Lion Camp include day and night game drives and walking safaris with expert guides. As the name of the camp suggests there are plenty of lion in the surrounding area. Guests can also expect to see elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and a number of other herbivores during a stay here. There is also a good chance of seeing leopard from this camp.

Specifically for children …
Although Lion Camp was not designed with children in mind, the guides and staff are good with children. The camp is built on stilts off the ground, the swimming pool is unfenced and animals roam freely around the camp so the minimum age requirement is seven years. Families with children aged seven to 12 years are required to hire a private vehicle. Children must be 16 years of age and accompanied by a parent or guardian to go on a walking safari.
