Time + Tide Luwi Bush Camp

Luwi is one of Norman Carr Safaris’ remote seasonal bush camps in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. The landscape is varied with ancient forests, a permanent river and open pans offering diverse and abundant wildlife. The Luwi area is excellent for lions and wild dogs, with wild dogs sometimes hunting right in front of camp. The camp is situated under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a lagoon and this permanent water source attracts game from far and wide making the camp area constantly busy with animals. Children from 12 years are welcome, with children under 12 years of age accepted on a case by case basis.

Accommodation & Facilities
Accommodation is in four safari tents with ensuite bathrooms. Meals are served in the shade of the trees, with a view of the grassy plain beyond. There are no family rooms nor can rooms accommodate extra beds / triples. Children must always share rooms with an adult so parents will need to divide and share rooms with their children accordingly.

Eating & Sleeping
The chefs are happy to prepare any foods that children enjoy (e.g. pizza, hamburgers, chicken strips, etc.) and will discuss children’s dietary preferences with parents on arrival. If there are any specific dietary requests please advise prior to travel.  There are no babysitting or childcare facilities and the camp is unfenced in a dense wildlife area so children must be closely supervised at all times.

Wildlife & Activities
Since there are very few roads in this tranquil area of the South Luangwa, the emphasis at Luwi is on walking. It is not unusual for guests to see lion and elephant while walking an expert guide, and the lagoon close to camp is home to hippos, crocodiles and many water birds. It is also possible to have fantastic game viewing from the camp’s hammock where guests can watch, among others, hyena, giraffe and many antelope that stroll past the camp. Due to its remote location you truly feel in the heart of the African wilderness. Luwi also combines well with the other three Norman Carr bush camps in South Luangwa as part of a walking safari itinerary. For an even greater sense of wilderness, guests can enjoy the ‘Return to the Wild’ sleep-out experience which is available at a supplementary cost and is a superb way to enjoy the African bush.

Specifically for children….
All the guides are child friendly and enjoy inspiring the next generation of world travellers and conservationists.
There are several activities that are tailored for children including:
• Children 12 years plus can accompany parents on bush walks. Younger children are can be taken on child orientated ‘poo walks’ where they can learn about all the fun and weird parts of nature.
• Sleepout under the stars – fall asleep under a canopy of a million twinkling stars, listening to the sounds of the night-time bush. A cosy tent, bush loo, culinary team and night watchman ensure that this experience is as comfortable as it is memorable. (Minimum age eight years, at the guide’s discretion). Available at an extra cost and needs to be pre-booked.
• Visit to the Yosefe School in Mfuwe depending on flight timings.  (The school is close to the airport).
• Fishing – child sized life jackets (10 years plus) and fishing equipment available.
