Time + Tide Mchenja Bush Camp

Time + Tide Mchenja Camp lies hidden in a shady grove of ebony trees on the bank of the Luangwa River in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. It is a picturesque site with expansive views of the river. The camp is unfenced and in a dense wildlife area so children must be closely supervised at all times. Children from eight years are welcome.

Accommodation & Facilities
Time + Tide Mchenja is an elegant, stylish camp offering accommodation in five rooms with thatched roofs and roll down canvas side, each with a private en-suite open air bathroom plus an inside free-standing roll top bath. The bar, lounge and dining area, set amongst the ancient ebony trees, has lovely views and there is a solar heated plunge pool shallow enough to be child friendly.

One of the five rooms is designed with families in mind and has two separate bedrooms with an interconnecting door so parents can easily reach their children, while still maintaining some privacy. The beds can be twin or double, with a third single bed added if needed. The two en-suite bathrooms are entirely private, each with its own shower, vanity and loo.

Eating & Sleeping
The chefs are happy to prepare child-friendly food (e.g. pizza, hamburgers, chicken strips, etc.) and will discuss children’s dietary preferences with parents on arrival. If there are any specific dietary requests, please advise prior to travel. A listening service is available (with prior warning) if parents would like to dine later than their children.

Wildlife & Activities
As well as day and night drives in open safari vehicles, guests can enjoy walks in the company of expert guides or spend time in the hide which, raised on stilts in the ebony grove, overlooks the stream where the wildlife comes to drink. The area is known for fantastic predator action, prolific leopard sightings and large herds of elephant.

Families of five people will be allocated their own guide and vehicle at no additional charge so that they have the flexibility to come back to camp early to accommodate the needs of the children. Families of less than five people can book a private vehicle and guide at a rate of $520 per 24 hours.

Specifically for children ….
All the guides are child friendly and enjoy inspiring the next generation of world travellers and conservationists. There are several activities tailored for children including:
• Children 12 years plus can accompany parents on bush walks. Younger children are taken on child orientated ‘poo’ walks where they can learn about all the fun and weird parts of nature.
• Sleepout under the stars – fall asleep under a canopy of a million twinkling stars, listening to the sounds of the night-time bush. A cosy tent, bush loo, culinary team and night watchman ensure that this experience is as comfortable as it is memorable. (Minimum age eight years and at the guide’s discretion). There is an additional cost of $275 per person and pre-booking is advisable.
• A visit to the local school – Yosefe School in Mfuwe, can be arranged depending on flight times (the school is close to the airstrip).
