Mwagusi Safari Camp

Mwagusi is situated in the north of Ruaha National Park on the banks of the Mwagusi sand river in Tanzania. Less well known than some parks, Ruaha has a wealth of game, over 520 species of birds and large concentrations of elephant, giraffe and buffalo. Children from five years are welcome.

Accommodation & Facilities
Built in the ‘old style’ of reed and thatch, 13 bandas accommodate a maximum of 26 guests. Constructed using stones, driftwood and bones, each banda has a comfortable tented central sleeping area, an en-suite spacious bathroom with a hot shower and flushing loo and an open-air shaded veranda area at the front. The veranda has a comfortable cushioned seating area and swinging hammock, making this the perfect place to relax and view the passing wildlife.  Families are accommodated in the standard bandas by adding extra beds. The bandas are sufficiently spacious to add two double beds (4ft6 wide) offering flexibility for families. In addition there are adjacent bandas available for families who wish to be next to each other.

Depending on the seasons, meals are either taken out in the open under the stars or in the comfortable centrally located bar / dining area. The food here is really tasty home cooking ensuring you will leave a little heavier.

Eating & Sleeping
With prior notice chefs are happy to provide children’s food at mealtimes to suit. Children are offered the standard meals or the chefs can tailor make meals according to preferences. If there are specific dietary requirements please request in advance to allow the kitchen to make the necessary purchases and plan the menu.

There are no formal childcare facilities so parents must be responsible for their children at all times.

Wildlife & Activities
The camps is owned and run by Chris Fox one of Tanzania’s elite guides. He ensures guests are warmly welcomed and beautifully looked after by his superb staff. Game activities are centred around drives but short bird walks are conducted in the early morning and longer guided walking safaris can be arranged (this should be done in advance so a National Park’s ranger can be booked, minimum age 16).

Specifically for children …
All the guides and staff here are friendly and enjoy the company of children, many are parents themselves or have young siblings. Activities are planned with the family and discussed on arrival into camp. Activities include:
• Fun wildlife questionnaires and time spent with the guides telling stories of living life in the bush and the importance of protecting the environment.
• Bird identification and animal tracking walks around the camp, led by one of the experienced guides.
