Richard’s River Camp
Richard’s River Camp is set on the banks of the Njageteck River in the Masai Mara, surrounded by 70 acres of private land in the Olare Orok Conservancy, giving guests peace and privacy. Beautifully appointed with furnishings and fabrics collected by the owner on her travels, the result is a casually luxurious tented camp in an area of exceptional wildlife. With young children of their own, the owners and staff know the requirements of families and are well versed at caring for children. There is no specific minimum age and having children in camp is routine to all.
Accommodation & Facilities
Richard’s River Camp has just eight tents within the main camp area, one of which has two bedrooms for a family, and is ideal for couples, families or groups of friends travelling together. There is a further two bedroomed tent with its own lounge and guide/vehicle that can be taken by a family or two couples and used exclusively with meals served here if guests choose this. The main area of camp has a beautifully furnished lounge with views out over the surrounding plains and bush. Many meals are eaten outside under the vast Kenyan skies, and picnics are often arranged. Each sizeable standard tent consists of a large bedroom area, behind which there is a dressing room and separate bathroom. The dressing rooms can be converted to a bedroom and can accommodate up to two extra beds; therefore each standard tent can sleep up to four people.
Eating & Sleeping
Children can have separate meal times and the menu is normally agreed with parents and children when in camp and can be cooked to order. Very specific dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance warning. A babysitting/listening service is available and is provided by the tent ladies and masseuses. There is not a cost but it is requested that parents tip these staff separately and would recommended $10 – $20 for the stay.
Wildlife & Activities
The nearby Ngoyanai springs are a permanent water source, which attract numerous animals to the camp’s environs, including a resident pride of lion which often hunt close to the camp. Guests can explore the Olare Orok private conservancy on both day and night game drives and guided walking safaris, as well as taking full day drives into the Masai Mara National Reserve. Meals are often arranged in the bush, and bird-watching in the area is excellent. Your guide can arrange a visit to a local Masai village, and scenic flights and hot air ballooning are also on offer, although please note that they must be booked and paid for in advance.
