The River Club – Now Closed

The River Club is 20 minutes upstream from Victoria Falls on the Zambian side of the Zambezi. It faces westward over the Zambezi river and overlooks the Zambezi National Park on the opposite bank. Set on a 50 acre secure property amongst lush riverine vegetation, the camp has a distinct Edwardian flavour. Guests can enjoy the sights and sounds of the Zambezi River in a peaceful and tranquil setting. The River Club welcomes children from the age of six.

Accommodation & Facilities
Eleven luxurious thatched chalets accommodate a maximum of 26 people. The rooms overlook the Zambezi River and have en-suite facilities including a bath. The main house has a large dining room, comfortable lounge and an impressive library. The swimming pool has a child friendly shallow end and a magnificent view over the river and lush gardens spread out beneath the trees. There is also a small treatment room, croquet lawn, tennis court, walking trail and mini gym for guests to use.

There are rooms and suites to suit families of all sizes. The largest is the Princess Mary Suite which is ideal for a family of up to six. This is a double storey villa in a private garden with its own pool. There are two en-suite bedrooms (ground floor and first floor) and space for two additional children’s beds in lounge area. Private dining is available in suite or with the other guests in the main lodge. There are three Luxury River Family Suites each sleeping up to five people. There are two en-suite bedrooms in a semi-open plan layout. Configured as a double and twin bedroom there is also the option for an additional child’s bed. Outside there is a deck with unimpeded views of the river beyond, a private plunge pool and a small private garden.

Eating & Sleeping
The chefs are happy to prepare child friendly food and with prior warning can provide meals at times to suit. If there are any specific dietary requests please advise prior to travel. There are no formal childcare facilities so parents must be responsible for their children at all times.

Wildlife & Activities
Although The River Club is not a safari lodge, the Zambezi National Park is located just across the river, and lion calls can often be heard at night. Rich birdlife is found in the area and hippo are regularly sighted (and heard) along the river’s edge. Fishing is good, with tiger fishing featuring prominently in the warmer months. Excursions to the Victoria Falls are a highlight and boat trips to the Zambezi River’s islands provide wonderful activities. Fishing and sundowner trips are offered, as are daily wildlife drives to the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park.  Other activities available in the area include white water rafting, bungee jumping, microlight and helicopter flights over the Falls, horse riding, and canoeing – all of which can be arranged locally for an additional cost.
