Tell me about luxury safari lodges
Africa’s luxury safari lodges come in all shapes and forms – from opulent properties offering all singing, all dancing lavishness in the wilderness to exquisite private safari houses. If you prefer not to stay under canvas in a classic tented camp, or would like to mix styles of accommodation, then a safari lodge is the perfect answer.
Lodges are solid constructions, consisting of buildings made of timber or stone, and tiled, thatched or shingled roofs. Many lodge cottages can be opened wide to let Africa in, while others have fixed glazing, or insect mesh where the glass might have been.
All have en-suite bathrooms with running hot and cold water. Outside showers, and in some cases, bathtubs are also regular features. Air-conditioning and fireplaces help cope with climatic extremes.
Private plunge pools abound, and there’s nothing better than sitting on your pool deck with a cool drink in hand watching the wildlife wander past.
The lodge itself will have a lounge, bar, dining room and, more often than not, a swimming pool. When possible meals will be taken under the African skies and traditional bomas – a fenced area around a camp fire – feature at many lodges.
Some have excellent shops selling clothing and curios.
Often there will be a sleep out or star bed option so if you fancy a night under the stars it’s possible to arrange. Something we’d highly recommend.
If you are travelling with children then many lodges offer interconnecting rooms or you might want to consider a private safari house. These are generally fully staffed including a private vehicle and safari guide meaning you can choose safari activities to suit your family’s requirements.
