Pole Pole is situated in The Mafia Island Marine Park which covers a surface of 821 km2 and is one of the most significant marine eco-systems in the world, with over 400 species of fish. On the island the vegetation is dominated by large palm groves, baobabs, mangroves and fruit trees. Mafia Island is approximately 30 miles off the Tanzanian coast and reachable by light aircraft only. Children from 10 years are welcome.

Accommodation & Facilities
Pole Pole meaning “slowly slowly” is set in a breezy tropical garden on the beach overlooking Chole Bay and other islands of the archipelago. The lodge has five bandas and two family bandas each with a large verandah and good views. The family bandas sleep four and have one double bedroom and one twin bedroom with a shared bathroom. The décor is ethnically inspired with a Zanzibari daybed, chairs and a coffee table. The service is relaxed and very personal, with first class cuisine, based on seafood, including many different culinary traditions with an Indian touch. The lodge has a swimming pool with shallow end and is surrounded by palm trees and partially shaded by a dramatic dhow sail rigged up on old masts. The swimming pool is next to the spa so guests are asked to keep noise to a minimum around the pool and children need to be accompanied by an adult.

Eating & Sleeping
Families tend to eat together at Pole Pole but separate mealtimes and dietary requests can be accommodated with advance warning. Children are offered the standard meals but the chefs can tailor make food according to the children’s preferences. There are no formal childcare facilities so parents must be responsible for their children at all times.

Activities
Daily activities include boat trips to the coral reefs and white sandy banks, snorkelling, island excursions to old Arab ruins and local villages. The snorkelling and diving are excellent, with the warm safe waters of the bays and lagoons providing a paradise for both experts and beginners alike.

Children from 10 years can dive although this needs to be booked in advance so that the equipment can be reserved.
