Somalisa Camp

Somalisa Camp is a luxury tented camp set in a grove of acacia trees beside a dry river bed in the heart of Hwange, Zimbabwe’s largest National Park. It enjoys a very peaceful location, far from other camps, and overlooks a waterhole.

Accommodation & Facilities
Each of the seven large and elegantly furnished ‘Sail’ tents at Somalisa has sliding gauze doors leading to a private deck, a wood-burning stove for the chilly winter nights, and its own en-suite bathroom, with a free-standing ‘slipper bath’, a flush loo and in- and out-side showers. Delicious meals are served in the tented mess area or on the deck outside. The elephants seem as likely to quench their thirst from the plunge pool as from the waterhole. A second pool has therefore been built higher up the decking for those wishing to swim in cleaner water without a trunk joining them!

Eating & Sleeping
Somalisa Camp does not have a family tent so parents and children need to be divided between tents accordingly.
Children eat the same food as the adults or if required chefs can adjust the dish to suit the children’s needs.  Specific dietary requirements can be accommodated with prior notice. There are no childcare facilities in camp and given the possibility of animals wandering through, parents are responsible for the supervision of their children at all times.

Wildlife & Activities
Activities at Somalisa revolve around the abundance of local wildlife and include guided day and night game drives, and bush walks. Known as one of Africa’s finest wildlife havens, especially its big elephant herds, Hwange offers visitors the opportunity to view vast numbers of buffalo, lion, cheetah, wild dog, white rhino and a wide variety of plains game.

Specifically for children …
Although Somalisa Camp warmly welcomes children from seven years, the camp does not offer specific activities for children and the wilderness environment here is not conducive to providing a specific outdoor activity programme for children.  Sister camp Somalisa Acacia is the more child-friendly option. That said, the guides are dedicated to giving young guests the best experience possible by providing variety and adjusting activities to suit attention spans.
