Little Chem Chem
Little Chem Chem, also known as ‘sunrise camp’, offers the raw drama of the East African bush in a very private setting. This lovely camp is set on a 16,000ha exclusive concession adjoining the Tarangire National Park, famous for its towering baobabs, and overlooks the serene Lake Burunge. Children from eight years are welcome unless the lodge is taken on an exclusive basis in which case children of all ages are welcome.
Accommodation & Facilities
Little Chem Chem is the smaller, more intimate sister to Chem Chem Lodge but with the same high standards and comprises just five large vintage-style safari tents. Striking the perfect balance between rusticity and luxury, each has a spacious and well-furnished bedroom, small seating area, pure white linen, a dressing room, and an en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers and flushing loo. Of the five safari tents, one is designed with families in mind and has two adjoining bedrooms separated by a canvas wall and curtain. The tent is configured as a master bedroom with king size bed and a twin bedroom with two single beds. An additional roll-away bed can be added to the master bedroom if required. Children under 13 years are required to share with an adult.
The camp has a mess tent, elegantly decorated with high quality pieces of classic furniture. In general, meals are served communally (private dining can be arranged upon request) and are often eaten under the open sky, lit either by the sun or the stars. The atmosphere of the camp is relaxed and peaceful, with guests encouraged to take life a little more slowly than usual.
Eating & Sleeping
Mealtimes are coordinated around the family. Chefs are very used to catering to children of all ages and dietary needs. Children are offered standard meals or the chefs can tailor make meals/menu for the children’s needs. If there are specific dietary requirements please request in advance to allow the kitchen to make the necessary purchases and plan the menu.
There are no formal childcare facilities so parents must be responsible for children at all times.
Wildlife & Activities
The wildlife around Little Chem Chem is plentiful and varied, with lions often seen close to the camp and heard calling at night, elephants drinking from Lake Burunge, cheetah hunting on the plains around the lake, and leopard, eland and lesser kudu seen in the denser woodland. The bird life is also abundant and colourful. Little Chem Chem is a good base for drives into Tarangire, and the concession is perfect for walking safaris (available to children 16 years and above), something of a speciality here. Guests can also go on day and night drives from camp.
Specifically for children …
Activities are planned with the family and will be discussed between the guides, management and guests when they arrive into camp. There are several activities that are tailored for children including:
• Search for wildlife tracks with your guide and make a mould of the footprints to take home as a souvenir.
• Gather food for the lizards and ground squirrels.
• Decorate safari themed cupcakes.
• Venture out on a fossil walk.
