Olakira Camp

Olakira Camp is a luxury mobile tented camp that follows the wildebeest migration across the Serengeti National Park. From December to March it is located in the Ndutu area, on the southern Serengeti plains where the wildebeest give birth.  The camp moves to the Kogatende area in the northern Serengeti from June to mid-November, to be in the ideal place to see the migrating herds travelling to and from the Masai Mara.  Children from six years are welcome although exceptions can be made if the camp is taken exclusively.  Families with children under 12 are obliged to use a private game vehicle, at an additional cost, during high season.

Accommodation & Facilities
Olakira Camp is an intimate camp comprising nine guest tents and two large mess/dining tents. The guest tents are spacious and comfortable with large king-size or twin beds and convenient en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets. Each tent has a spacious covered deck which offers the opportunity for the bed/s to be rolled out and for guests to sleep under the stars.  Staff ask each night where the guests would like to sleep and turn down accordingly. The family tent sleeps four and comprises a master bedroom with king size bed and an interconnected twin bedded tent for children. There are two bathrooms. In addition there are two triple rooms available for smaller families.

Meals are served in the dining tent or in a private location under the Serengeti stars.

Eating & Sleeping
Children (and families) can have separate meal times and the chefs are happy to accommodate children’s food requests where possible. If there are specific dietary requirements please request in advance to allow the kitchen to make the necessary purchases and plan the menu.  If parents would like to dine later than the children, a listening service can be arranged whereby a guard is posted outside the children’s tent and will alert parents if the children wake.

Wildlife & Activities
Olakira follows the greatest show on earth – the  migration, so whether the camp is positioned in the southern or  northern regions of the Serengeti the wildlife viewing is sure to be outstanding and provide you and the family memories of a lifetime. During game drives you will have close encounters with astonishing numbers of animals which can include lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and if you are lucky, you might even witness the members of the vast wildebeest herd give birth almost simultaneously around Ndutu. Hot air balloon safaris are also available (minimum age seven years).

Specifically for children …
Chilren will be given an activity pack on arrival which is filled with toys and games to keep them entertained both in camp and out on safari.  Safari activities are discussed on arrival in camp and are planned according to the family’s interests and attention spans.   These include:
• Family game drive – All the guides are adept at keeping children engaged and making the bush exciting and fun.
• Baking with camp chefs – biscuits, pizzas or fresh bread.
• Bush skills – how to make a fire without matches, make a toothbrush from a twig, find your way in the bush without a compass and many more survival skills to rival Bear Grylls!
