Huab Under Canvas

**CAMP CLOSED**

Huab Under Canvas is an exclusive semi-permanent tented camp in a core area for desert adapted black rhino in the Huab Conservancy in Damaraland, approximately 90 km north west of Khorixas. Children of all ages are welcome.

Accommodation & Facilities
Available on an exclusive basis only, for a maximum of 16 people, the eight tents are tucked away in a grove of Mopane trees on the banks of a tributary of the Huab River. Protected from the elements, the green canvas tents are raised on mobile platforms and have solar lighting and outdoor en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot bucket showers. Outside each tent is a small private seating area.  Family tents can be created by combining two tents such that a dome tent is pitched on the deck, next to the main Meru tent, and can take two stretcher beds/cots for the children. Alternatively a bedroll (mattress and sleeping bag on floor) can be added to the parents’ tent for small children. The communal areas feature a spacious mess tent with comfortable lounge and dining room.

Eating & Sleeping
As the camp is exclusively set up per family meals can be served whenever suits.  Children can eat earlier than the parents with advance notice and all arrangements can be tailored to the requirements of the family, with no concern about how it may impact other guests. The food is wholesome and delicious, and freshly prepared meals include children friendly dishes such as roast chicken, veggies, potatoes and delicious desserts like banana boat, apple crumble etc. Specific dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice. There is no babysitting available so parents need to be responsible for children at all times.

Wildlife & Activities
The area is home to Hartmann’s mountain zebra, oryx, springbok, steenbok, klipspringer, elephant, rhino, spotted and brown hyena, jackal, leopard, cape fox and African wild cat in addition to several others. Activities include tracking desert adapted rhino, exploring the upper and less crowded Huab River in search of desert adapted elephants, nature walks and drives as well as the possibility to visit some nearby prehistoric rock engravings. Guests can also enjoy multi-day walking safaris and a Stellar Escape – a fabulous sleep out under a billion stars in complete privacy.

Specifically for children …
Many of the guides are parents themselves and regularly host families on guided safaris throughout Namibia. Activities are planned according to the family’s needs and interests. Children of all ages are welcome on the walking safaris which are tailored to the ages and energy levels of the family. These might be short strolls along the river bed for young children or tracking rhino which does not have an age restriction but is offered to children provided they can traverse rough terrain without assistance.  The Stellar Escapes sleep out is possible for adventurous-minded families who would enjoy a night sleeping under the open skies in the wilderness without the cover of a tent.
