Shipwreck Lodge

Shipwreck Lodge has been designed to resemble the shipwrecks scattered along Namibia’s Skeleton Coast and is a great spot from which to experience this extraordinary area.  The lodge is inside the Skeleton Coast National Park and located between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers, roughly 70km from Mowe Bay.   While the coast is strewn with bleached whale bones and the wrecks of over a thousand ships, the interior is an uninhabited desert of rolling, endless sand.  It’s magical and hauntingly picturesque region and contains irreplaceable and fragile habitat for a range of endangered wildlife species.

Accommodation & Facilities
Shipwreck Lodge comprises ten rooms, of which two suit families.  Each solar-powered room has an en-suite bathroom and wood burning stove which is a welcome addition on chilly evenings and mornings.  There is a lounge and restaurant – also designed along the shipwreck theme – with a wide wrap around deck offering uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Wildlife & Activities
Guests staying here can explore the interior dunes and dry river beds where unique desert-dwelling animals carve out an existence.  The species found in the area include desert-adapted elephant, lion, brown hyena and baboon.  Marine life thrives and Cape fur seals line the shoreline in large colonies, and the birdlife is also prolific.  Among the activities are wildlife drives into the Skeleton Coast National Park, sundowner drives into the dune fields, visits to the Suiderkus and Karimona shipwrecks, and quad biking (16 years old and over only) in the area.
