Rekero Camp

Rekero Camp is hidden in a riverine forest close to the confluence of the Talek and Mara rivers, in the southern section of the Masai Mara Reserve and close to many of the migration river crossings. At 1,510 square kilometres the Masai Mara offers wonderful scenery and an abundance of big wildlife, and is only a 45 minute flight from Nairobi.  Children from five years are welcomed at Rekero.

Accommodation & Facilities
Rekero has a long and rich history, and the knowledge and hospitality shown by the staff and the local Masai and Ndorobo guides is what makes a stay here so special. The tented camp is set up seasonally and is in the style of a smart mobile camp with nine large tents set on the edge of the river. Flushing loos and hot bucket showers are en-suite and there is an enamel basin on the verandah, where hot and cold water is provided. The two family tents are similar to the standard double tents and include an additional children’s room behind the bathroom at the back of the tent.  A third children’s bed can also be added to the standard double tents. There is also a dining tent, although most meals are enjoyed outdoors.

Eating & Sleeping
Separate mealtimes and children’s menus are offered and can be arranged with the camp manager on arrival. All the usual child friendly food can be prepared and specific dietary requirements can be accommodated with prior notice. The camp offers a listening service for sleeping children whereby an Askari (guard) is posted at the door of the sleeping child’s tent and can alert parents in the dining room if the child wakes.

Wildlife & Activities
Wildlife viewing is predominantly by vehicle and the knowledge of the local guides is such that guests from Rekero are unlikely to encounter other tourists during their stay. The camp is ideally situated for viewing the big cats, and also for the annual wildebeest migration. On the reserve there are also large herds of buffalo and various antelope, and in addition hippo, giraffe, elephant, cheetah and leopard are frequently seen. Activities available at an additional cost are cultural visits, guided walks in the neighbouring conservancy, and hot air balloon flights.

Specifically for children …
• All the guides receive specific training on guiding children.
• Cultural visits to nearby communities
• Unparalleled views of the great migration crossing point in front of camp
• Close to the Mara River for easy access to other crossing points
