An unexpected Kenyan delight

An unexpected Kenyan delight

A recent beach holiday took an unexpected turn when I was presented with the opportunity to visit Kenya en-route home. I don’t need an excuse to spend longer in Africa so after a sensational week enjoying pristine beaches and luxury lodges in Mozambique, I touched down in the Masai Mara.

Santorini, one of the stops on my Mozambique holiday

How would I find things, I wondered, after the strange couple of years we’ve endured? Superlative – and I’ve been to the Mara  several times before – only goes some of the way to describe the extraordinary wildlife I saw in 48 hours. Staying at Mara Expedition Camp, set in private land on the edge of the Masai Mara we enjoyed a peaceful location close to prime wildlife viewing.

Mara Expedition Camp is the lovely spot Lucinda stayed during her unexpected weekend in the Masai Mara

There were antelope a plenty with masses of eland, wildebeest, hartebeest and topi dotted across the huge open plains. Zebra, giraffe and ever amusing warthogs were there among the usual supporting cast. My highlights were cubs, both lion and cheetah, lions on a kill, young leopard, and an elephant and tiny calf. It was lovely to be back in these majestic surroundings, albeit briefly – but that reminded me that if you’ve only got a short time, don’t discount the Mara, it’s all here and you don’t need long to see it.

Next on my surprise road-trip was the Kenyan coast and Kinondo Kwetu, a longstanding Aardvark Safaris’ favourite south of Mombasa. Owner-run, this wonderfully relaxing, stylish, property is a superb home away from home and an enchanting spot for a few days. Delicious food, plenty to do if you want activity, lovely places to relax if you don’t. A winner on all fronts.
