South Africa’s safari areas are some of the best on the continent, while Mauritian hospitality is often used as a byword for quality of service and it has beaches to match the high standards of the hotel personnel. A triangle of direct flights make it easy to combine a safari in South Africa with a beach holiday in Mauritius as a malaria free holiday. Search for Africa’s iconic wildlife in a malarial free reserve in South Africa before flying to Mauritius for some down time on a tropical beach. Here is our pick of the best malaria fere bush and beach accommodaiton options.

South Africa

Bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, South Africa is a vast land often called ‘a world in one country’. Its landscapes stretch from tropical white-sand beaches to snow-capped mountains and include spectacular views and wildlife-filled national parks and reserves. The north, west and south of the country offer malaria free areas with safari options in the Waterberg, Madikwe, Tswalu and Kwandwe reserves. Jaci’s Safari Lodge pioneered child friendly safaris back in 1999 (the same year Aardvark Safaris began) and has been at the forefront of family holidays ever since, often combining with a family villa at Ant’s Hill for a superb malaria free option. Morukuru Owner’s House with two en-suite bedrooms, is ideal for a family, a couple, or good friends travelling together and can be taken on an exclusive use basis.

Mauritius

Mauritius meanwhile is an ideal place to enjoy some sophisticated comfort at the end of an African safari. Despite a wealth of things to do and see on the island, most visitors find the sweet temptations of the major coastal resorts – the spas, the golf courses, the restaurants, the swimming pools – quite enough to fill their time. Hotels here first set the standards of luxury the rest of the world must follow, and continue to evolve to further refine the concept of tropical luxury. Expect excellent facilities, wonderful cuisine, and an attention to detail that means your every whim is satisfied.

While Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is huge in comparison to the safari camps we recommend, the service is remarkably personal and of a very high quality. The hotel was 80% full when I stayed with my family, but I was still greeted at the front desk by my name and it was no problem arranging supper completely out of normal meal times for a daughter having a melt down.

How they combine

There are direct flights between the UK and South Africa (British Airways and Virgin), South Africa and Mauritius (SAA and Air Mauritius), and back to the UK from Mauritius (British Airways). There is no need to back track or fly indirect.

When to travel

The north and south of South Africa have different climates, making it a year round destination. Therefore the time of year you choose for your safari and beach holiday depends on the Mauritius climate. Their summer, the UK’s winter months, are peak season for visitors as temperatures are highest and if there is rain it tends to be short sharp downpours. May and June can be cool, but popularity rises again between July and September when it is generally clear and sunny with daytime maximum temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius.
