Luggage is limited on light aircraft, so safari goers generally need to pack light. However different African countries, and internal airlines, have difference weight allowances. While you will need to check your particular safari holiday, we’ve listed the main ones here as a general guide.

Botswana:  Mack Air Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 30cm wide, 35cm high and 70cm long. Soft–sided luggage is strongly recommended to fit in smaller luggage compartments.

Moremi Air:  Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Soft–sided luggage is mandatory, hard case bags will not be accepted.

Helicopter Horizons Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Soft–sided luggage only, hard cases will not be accepted. (only for transfers, ask your tour operator for restrictions on scenic flights)

Wilderness Air Botswana Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 30cm wide, 35cm high and 70cm long. Soft bags with a rigid base will be accepted but soft–sided luggage is strongly recommended to fit in small luggage compartments.

Kenya:  SafariLink Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 15 kg / 33 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 60cm wide, 35cm high and 70cm long. Soft–sided luggage only so it fits in small luggage compartments.

Mombasa Air Safari Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 15 kg / 33 lbs per person. Soft–sided luggage only so it fits in small luggage compartments.

Air Kenya  Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 15 kg / 33 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions for checked luggage 33cm wide, 60cm high and 45cm long. Maximum dimensions for hand luggage 23cm wide, 30cm high and 53cm long.  Soft–sided luggage only so it fits in small luggage compartments.

Malawi:  Ulendo Airlink Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 15 kg / 33 lbs per person. Soft–sided luggage only so it fits in small luggage compartments.
Maldives: Trans Maldivan Airways Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, on sea-plane flights is 25 kg / 55 lbs per person.
Mozambique: 

 

Luggage, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person on helicopter flights to Benguerra Island.
Namibia

 

Wilderness Air Namibia: Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 25cm wide, 30cm high and 62cm long. Soft–sided luggage only, hard cases will not be accepted.

Skeleton Coast Fly-In safari Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 10 kg / 22 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 40cm wide, 40cm high and 60cm long. Soft–sided luggage only, hard cases will not be accepted.

Rwanda:  Internal transfers are typically done by road. Ask your tour operator if your itinerary includes a helicopter flight.
Seychelles: Air Seychelles Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, on international flights is 28 kg / 61 lbs per person.
South Africa: 

 

Fedair Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 40cm wide, 30cm high and 60cm long. Soft–sided luggage is strongly recommended to fit in smaller luggage compartments.
Tanzania:  Coastal Aviation Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 15 kg / 33 lbs per person. An XL seat class is available which allows 30kg / 66lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 29cm wide, 48cm high and 76cm long. Soft–sided luggage only so it fits in small luggage compartments.

Auric Air Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 65cm wide, 35cm high and 90cm long. Soft–sided bags only so it fits in small luggage compartments.

Uganda

 

AeroLink Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 15 kg / 33 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions for checked luggage 33cm wide, 60cm high and 45cm long. Maximum dimensions for hand luggage 23cm wide, 30cm high and 53cm long.  Soft–sided luggage only so it fits in small luggage compartments.
Zambia: 

 

Proflight: Flights from Lusaka to Livingstone or Mfuwe allow each passenger one piece of luggage weighing up to 23 kg / 50 lbs.

All other routes with small aircraft allow each passenger to bring one piece of luggage, weighing no more than 15 kg / 33 lbs, and 1 carry on item (such as a laptop or purse), weighing up to 5 kg / 11 lbs.  Soft–sided luggage only, to fit in small luggage compartments.

Nyasa Air Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 15 kg / 33 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 30cm wide, 25cm high and 62cm long. Soft–sided luggage only, hard cases will not be accepted.

Zimbabwe:  Wilderness Air Zimbabwe Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 30cm wide, 35cm high and 70cm long. Soft bags with a rigid base will be accepted but soft–sided luggage is strongly recommended to fit in small luggage compartments.

Safari Logistics Luggage allowance, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. Maximum dimensions of 25cm wide, 30cm high and 62cm long. Soft–sided luggage is mandatory, hard case bags will not be accepted.
