Republic of Congo is go!

The Republic of the Congo is a former French colony and one of six countries that make up the Congo Basin. Second in size to the mighty Amazon, the forests of the Congo Basin contain the greatest number of mammals, primates, birds, amphibians, fish and swallowtail butterflies in Africa.  More than a 1,000 species of bird can be found here. The basin is a total of 3.7 million sq km and is home to some of the largest undisturbed stands of tropical rainforest on the planet, in addition to large wetlands. This is no longer the ‘Heart of Darkness’.  This is Africa unmasked, beautiful and powerful, and a very exciting destination to be open to tourism.

Short visit
A short trip would focus on the lowland gorillas in Odzala-Kokoua National Park which are very different to their mountain cousins in Rwanda and Uganda.  These can be seen from Ngaga Camp which is reached via a night at Mboko Camp on the way into the park.

Longer visit
The forests in this area of the Congo have so much more than gorillas and we would highly recommend that you take time to explore all three of the camps here – Ngaga Camp, Lango Camp and Mboko Camp – to get a feeling of the scale of the biodiversity in the area.  Threaded with rivers and tendrils of savannah that provide a natural home to a wonderful diversity of wildlife, this wilderness contains more than 1,000 bird species, 700 types of fish, and over a 10,000 plant species. There are thought to be 100,000 western lowland gorillas in the Congo Basin, along with large populations of forest buffalo, forest elephant and bongo.
